Castillo De Santa Barbara - One of the biggest medieval
fortresses in Europe resides in Alicante, The Castillo De Santa Barbara,
the castle gets its name from the day it was battled over on St. Barbaras
Day. It covers the majority of the Benacantil Mountain. The Castillo De
Santa Barbara overlooks amazing views of the Bay and surrounding farmlands.
Inside the Castle you can see also a nice exposition about Spanish sculptures
and other pieces, and you can explore the inside of the rooms, corridors,
dungeons, and passages. You can access the Castillo de Santa Barbara via
walking or by car up the slope of the mountain through beautiful pine
trees, or the easier route of the lift at a small fee.
Marq-Archeology Museum - situated close to Santa Barbara
Castle, the museum is split into many rooms where you will find the Prehistory
room, Iberian Art room, Roman Culture room, Middle Ages room, Modern Age
room and the Archeology and Science room. This is one of Spain’s
best Archeological museums.
San Nicolas De Bari Cathedral - is situated in the
old town of Alicante, it is a small cathedral built in the XVII Century
in a renaissance and baroque style. There is a beautiful high altar and
gardens with columns. Another church is Iglesia de Santa Maria which is
close by to the cathedral.
The Town Hall - located behind the La Explanada park,
look inside and see the building and occasionally they offer an exhibition,
the Town Hall starts the old town of the city and has many narrow streets
to walk around and places to see with many cafes scattered around the
streets.
La Explanada - is the largest and most beautiful park
in the city and is wonderful for walks, you can walk around having an
ice cream or stop at one of the bars along the park. You will find a few
small stalls where you can buy books and souvenirs. With the palm trees’
hovering over you for shade, with beautiful vistas it has to offer of
the surrounding area as well as the harbor.
Alicante harbour - is full of boats to take you on excursions
along the coastline, you can get the glass bottom boat to take you to
Tabarca Island for the day, which is lovely for snorkeling.
You can also take the ferry that will take you to Northern Africa (Algeria)
and to the Balearic Islands.
The harbour also has activities that you can book, Canoeing, Kayaks, Water
Sking, Fishing, and scuba Diving.
There are also a lot of nice pubs, taverns, restaurants and shops at the
harbour.
The Aquarium in the middle of the square is worth a visit, see some of
the fish that are living in the Mediterranean Sea.
Mercado central - used to be the central market, it
was built in 1921, and it is a fantastic example of architecture in the
twentieth century in the city of Alicante.
Marble Floor - There are several marble quarries in
the region around Alicante. The pavement of the Esplanade of Spain inspired
in the waves of the Mediterranean sea, it is formed by millions of marble
pieces in marquina black, alicante red and ivory cream colours.
Shopping - is fantastic in Alicante with shops everywhere
you go and some new and huge shopping centers. Rambla Mendez Nunez is
a commercial street that starts from the promenade with many cafes for
you to stop at.
Like many villages/towns Alicante has market days Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Saturdays. Keep an eye out for the FREE tour guide bill board, as
this is a FREE bus you can get that takes you too many different places,
approach them for details.
Alicante is a large place and you will find many squares with sculptures
or a fountain, they are great used as meeting points incase you do separate
or want to separate and meet up with your friends later.
Beaches - There is a small beach El Postiguet, at the
end of Alicante, you can find many more beaches up and down the coast
of Alicante a short distance away. For instance about 5 minutes drive,
and very popular beaches they are too due to the beautiful white sandy
beaches they have along the coast line. Definitely a place you’d
enjoy lying your towel down and soaking up the sun.
Golf Courses - are scattered all around Alicante and
you are sure to find your closest one at least a 10 minute drive away,
